ILLUSTRATIVE PROJECT QUOTE
How to estimate website project pricing
Instead of picking a total from another freelancer's price list, start with deliverables and estimate the time required for your own work. A five-page brochure website, a complicated e-commerce site and a custom web application aren't interchangeable just because each has five pages.
For a basic illustrative five-page website, assume three hours per page, four hours for discovery, three hours for testing and launch, and three hours for expected revisions. That is 25 planned hours. At an illustrative rate of $45 per hour, labor would be $1,125. With $75 in direct expenses, a 10% contingency adds $120, for a subtotal of $1,320 before taxes. A 30% deposit would be $396, leaving $924.
What to include in a website quote
- Page complexity: distinguish simple content pages from custom designs, dynamic content and integrations.
- Client materials: specify who provides copy, images, domain and hosting, and whether content entry is included.
- Mobile and accessibility: record responsive layouts and what testing or accessibility work is included.
- Revisions: name the review rounds and the process for out-of-scope requests.
- Launch responsibilities: include or exclude deployment, DNS, analytics, training and ongoing support explicitly.
Choosing hourly versus fixed-price website work
For an agreed set of pages and deliverables, a fixed quote may give the client more predictable spending. For exploratory integrations or changing requirements, hourly work with a clear budget cap may fit better. See hourly vs fixed-price freelancing for trade-offs.
Frequently asked questions
What is a reasonable price for a five-page website?
There is no single price that fits every freelancer, location, stack or client. Estimate your actual tasks, required expertise, business costs and contract terms. The default numbers above illustrate the calculation only.
Should a deposit be added to the quoted total?
No. A deposit normally pays part of the agreed total. The remaining balance is the total less the deposit. Specify due dates and refund terms in your agreement.
Does this include hosting, domain renewals and maintenance?
Only if you enter their project-specific costs or add the hours required. Recurring services should usually be described separately, along with any ongoing fees.
What if the scope changes after approval?
Describe the requested change, estimate its additional cost and timeline, and get the client's agreement before performing the extra work. Our freelance quote checklist walks through that process.
